Can your iPhone correct your color blindness?

"I used it today in the real world. It was amazing! I was at Target with my girlfriend and saw a blue plaid shirt that I liked. She asked me what color it was so I pulled up DanKam and said "purple." I actually could see the real color, through my iPhone! Thanks so much!"

"I am literally, almost in tears writing this, I CAN FRICKIN’ SEE PROPER COLORS!!!!"

"Thank you so much for this app. It’s like an early Christmas present! I, too, am a color blind Designer/Webmaster type with long-ago-dashed pilot dreams. I saw the story on Boing Boing, and immediately
downloaded the app. My rods and cones are high-fiving each other. I ran into the other room to show a fellow designer, who just happened to be wearing the same “I heart Color” t-shirt that you wore for the Forbes photo. How coincidental was that? Anyway, THANKS for the vision! Major kudos to you…"

"@waxpancake: Dan Kaminsky made an augmented-reality iPhone app for the
colorblind. And it *works*. http://bit.ly/gOJAn0"

Apparently so :)

DanKam is a iPhone app that displays video from the camera (among other sources), remixed so that its a lot easier for the color blind to see colors, and the differences between colors, more accurately.

Pros and cons of DanKam: Colorblind Fix app for iPhone and iPad

DanKam: Colorblind Fix app good for

I am red green color blind since birth. 42 years old who score 0/10 in ishihara color test. Looking through the filter, I score 10/10. So happy!!!!
As someone whos lived with colour blindness for 35 years, I can say this app is truly amazing. To finally know for sure what colour something is, its mind-blowing. Thank you.
I have red green colourblindness. I have indicators which are either yellow or green. Without any assistance I am not able to differentiate between the two colours. I just downloaded this App and thankfully, with this app, I was able to differentiate them. Very practical.
This app is fantastic. I really would like a pair of enchroma glasses but this is the next best thing. The only problem I have is that the interface looks very old and the app has not yet been updated for the new phones. Other than that, I CAN SEE COLOR!!!

Some bad moments

Hi everybody! Downloaded this app 2 weeks ago. The ishihara modes or the "load image from gallery" mode crash the app or block the iphone. The image area goes black and there is no reaction to controls. When it comes to support, the provided e-mail address from dankam is not working. You just get the standard mailer deamon, couldnt reach destination crap. And apple is also extraordinarily helpful. When i asked for a refund, i was told to contact dankam :-| Tried that, wrong mail address, but i cant submit a second problem-report on the same problem. Just so professional, apple, thanks. As for the reader: Save your time and your 2.50, dont buy this app!
Doesnt help one bit. The filters change the colours to other tones that I still cant confidently differentiate. Minimal instructions or explanations. Useless in normal room light without a flash. Dont waste the $. Maybe soon some other developer will get it right.
I bought this app, opened up a photo with colors I know that I cant see, held up my iPhone and saw what I was missing. Amazing. This is highly recommended for any color blind people. The refresh rate is slow, and the interface is a little rough, but its completely usable and offers an amazing in-your-pocket answer to "What color is this? Is this green?" I cant wait to go shopping with this app.
This app is nothing short of amazing. Next time you cant decipher a chart, or you find yourself confused and staring at your closet, DanKam will totally bail you out. Applications like this are exactly what the iPhone was made for.
I was blown away looking at the color vision test to see what I was missing. Ive only tried the augmented reality indoors and frankly, it kinda useless. First, the refresh rate is horrible and second, no matter how much I tinker with the settings, the colors I CAN see end up distorted while the ones I cant come through. Doesnt help much when you want to see what one color looks like against a known background. Havent given up on it yet, but for now it definitely should be considered a work in progress, and the price should reflect that. As it is, its overpriced for what it can do.
Dude. For a hacker hero to also deliver an augmentation of truly heroic impact... Im stunned, and deeply grateful. On the right hardware, this will be even more useful. And youve just renewed an already profound enthusiasm for real AR. You rock. And thank you. That was mighty neighborly of you.
